Hoffman was inappropriate but the anti war movement was very much a part of the mind set for people there... as well as most of the patrons being so stoned they don't remember a lot.

The fact that Pete was in a shitty mood meant the Woodstock performance had a power and vitality it might not have had otherwise. Look at the performance of Sparks for proof of that.
