U.S. minority population hits new mark

Hello and welcome to a UPI top news headline. I'm Kristin Volk on this Thursday, May 17, 2007. The minority population in the U.S. has reached an all-time high. The U.S. Census Bureau says there are now more than 100 million minorities. That's larger than the total population of all but 11 countries. About a third of the U.S. population is a member of a minority group with Hispanics making up the largest piece of this pie, followed by blacks then Asians. U.S., Iranian and Iraqi officials have agreed to meet in Baghdad to talk about Iraq. Representatives from each country will reportedly meet May 28. White House spokesman Tony Snow says the talks don't mean relations will be normalized between the U.S. and Iran. An Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman says Tehran has agreed to hold negotiations with Washington for the Iraqi people and the security of the country. Iran has denied U.S. accusations that it's helping Iraqi insurgents with weapons and training. Top U.S. Justice Department officials reportedly discussed firing dozens of U.S. attorneys...not just the eight who were dismissed. The Washington Post says the agency contemplated letting go at least 26 attorneys. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified before a congressional committee last week saying that only eight were considered for dismissal. Some of the prosecutors on the lists were not aware they had been considered for firing. The possibility of Britain's Prince Harry serving in Iraq has ended. The UK's top general says the Prince will not serve as a troop commander because of a number of specific threats against him. In a statement, the 22-year-old Prince says he's very disappointed, but fully understands and accepts the decision. He says he remains committed to his army career.
