He's finger picking on the original tape. The song also does have a different feel to it. Some prefer it, some don't. Just a question of style. Strumming is more suitable for live performance, I think. It's more dynamic, and it must be hard playing a harp solo while finger picking, tho I'm sure he was capable of it.
