you answered this as if macrophage really do eat microbes as their regular diet. Any of the leukocytes (any white blood cells including macrophage) do not phagocyte microbes as their food. In fact for the most part after ingesting microbes most of the phagocyte's life is reduced dramatically for example neutrophils die after ingesting 4 to 6 microbes.
