OM MA NI PE ME HUNG is the compassion mantra of Tchenrezig (tibet) or Avalokiteshvara (sanscrit), the Buddha of compassion. HH Dalai Lama is considered an emanation of Tchenrezig. So they sing it for him. It has a deep meaning but its 6 syllables are to liberated the 6 realms beings: gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts and hell beings called the pretas. It's a very strong mantra although short and simple. OM MA NI PE ME HUNG
