i thought this movie is based around existentialism, but the blanket idea seems to contradict it. if everyone is connected and no two events are different, and we are a collective conscious... then individual responsibilities are irrelevant. or maybe we need to attain a great degree of self-discipline and responsibilty so the structure of the "blanket" remains intact. life, like the blanket, really is a structureless form though.

Not really. It changes your outlook and perception on life, which is pretty much the point. No, it doesn't physically change anything directly, but it changes your way of thinking which in turn may change your thoughts, decisions, and actions.
