Vesselina Kasarova sings Marguerite's 'D'Amour l'ardente flamme' from Berlioz's La damnation de Faust at NDK in Sofia, Bulgaria circa 1996. Never mind the not so good oboe solo, Kasarova is the main event! If you enjoy this, try the DVD of Berlioz's 'La damnation de Faust' from Salzburg Festival 1999 or buy the RCA Red Seal CD 'The Magic of Kasarova'.

Susan Graham also sings it well. That's true. Though I'm glad Kasarova sings it differently than she does... And you will never see me go around saying that others should abandon other singers' clip to hear Kasarova's version. If all singers sing a song just the way I like it, it would all be so dull for others who don't share my taste... and then Kasarova wouldn't be so special anymore either. Originality is an essential ingredient in any artform.

I'm afraid I never had the chance to her Kathleen Ferrier live, but from the recordings, I say you had just paid Kasarova a grand compliment! :o) What mesmerizing artists these two are indeed. I wish Ferrier was around longer and made more recordings. She left us way too soon.

I SDCmorg I agree that here happy look matches that part of the aria but the beginning of the aria is totally Pathos and very sad,,,there is no question...and she is really smiling there. So she probably does just go with the music...There is just no reason, in my opinion to smile in the first section of the aria. Thanks for your reply..

I think she really loves French music and she tends to let herself go with the music more in concert setting. :o) Besides, not all of the song is sad, really. She starts smiling when Marguerite lapses into her memory of Faust's physical presence, I think.

I just don't understand why she smiles when singing such sad text. She looks almost happy about losing her love forever!

Yes, just great. Like Kabaivanska, Dimitrova, Miltcheva, etc.
